FOCUS: New Technologies for better efficiency in Aviation Security and Safety
Date: January 31, 2012
Venue: Le Meridian Hotel, New Delhi
"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect." — Captain A. G. Lamplugh, British Aviation Insurance Group, London. c. early 1930's.
The huge growth in air travel has made every Airport a potential terror target and it is now a key area where intense security is an absolute requirement. Over 600 million people fly each year, not to mention the millions bags which go along with them. The number of passengers in the Domestic sector alone has increased from334.06 Lakhs in 2010 to 396.31 Lakhs in 2011. Air travel is an essential part of our daily lives. Apart from growth in the number of passengers, air freight too showed a growth of 6.9% over the previous year and is predicted to increase by 7.5% by the year 2015.
Most of our efforts are dedicated to ensuring the unthinkable doesn't happen.
The Aviation industry is therefore, no longer considered a safe, non-political global transportation system moving goods and people safely from one place to another, but rather a potential liability that exposes all nations to the threat of a terrorist attack. The high concentration of people on large airliners, the potential high death rate with each single attack on an aircraft, and the ability to use a hijacked airplane as a lethal weapon does provide an alluring target for terrorism. Apart from the threat of terrorism attacks, the other issues faced by Indian airports are criminal activities such as the trafficking of drugs and contraband.
Airports and the Aviation industry require specialised security solutions and in this current situation of elevated threats, the identification of suspicious activity amongst passengers as well as staff, in and around the airports, is imperative.
The protection of airside and restriction of unauthorised access, particularly to aircraft, is a key element in the provision of Airport security - this includes the security of the Perimeter as well as airside. As Airport Perimeters are normally several kilometres in length, this can often be a challenge.
The objective of airport security is to safeguard the passengers, crew, ground personnel, the general public, cargo, catering trucks, fuel bowers and fuel farms, aircraft and the airport infrastructure against unlawful acts. New staffing patterns, different from the normal police staffing patterns, have to be innovated for airports. There has to be a greater accent on modern technology and mechanisation to increase the effectiveness of the force deployed. The Government recognizes the urgent need to develop an airport security organisation, in order to have an efficient, specialised, commercially conscious and above all, a passenger-friendly force at the airports.
Aviation security and safety go hand in hand. One cannot be safe without being secured and vice versa. It is the effort of the aviation personnel including the security staff, ground handlers, marshallers, pilots, cabin crew and the airline and airport management that air travel is considered the safest means of travel.
Aviation Watch brings you an array of world class security equipment, technologies and software that are capable of securing every corner of the airport from the point one enters the airport perimeter, till the time one is seated in the aircraft. We also have our aviation experts giving us an analysis of the safety threats faced by us today, as well as solutions as to how make the aviation industry even safer.
This conference provided all stake holders the opportunity to explore the various security equipment and technologies available that would enhance security and safety at airports, without causing undue inconvenience to passengers and which would help in streamlining the processes.
