Aviation Watch is an initiative of the Infrastructure Power & Petroleum Association of India (IPPAI),an independent non-profit organization which aims to create a neutral forum for discussion and examination of policy, regulatory and consumer issues, critical to development of the Indian infrastructure sectors. The Indian civil aviation sector has witnessed prodigious growth in the recent past, fuelled by the open skies policy of the government. Important policy changes to scale back entry barriers and increase competition in the airline industry have taken place during the year.
Further, as a policy initiative to open up the air transport sector, the Government permitted private airlines, which have completed five years of domestic operation, to operate to any destination in the world, excluding Gulf countries and West Asia. Airport modernization, “open skies” with important markets and the purchase of new aircraft for national carriers are major catalysts for development in India’s civil aviation sector. With FDI in civil aviation sector being raised to 49% through automatic route and 100% by Non Resident Indians through automatic route, there is renewed interest in the sector as a viable investment option. The prolific addition of aircraft planned by the existing and upcoming airline operators over the next couple of years (over 250 aircraft) will put immense pressure on the aviation infrastructure of the country. The expansion in inward and outward operations of international airlines in India has also added to this pressure. The load on Air traffic control for over flights has almost doubled. The fast paced development of the sector has brought forth many safety and security issues which warrant immediate action.
